The scenic drive, which takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, passes through Rwanda’s beautiful countryside, offering spectacular views of rolling hills, terraced farmland, and traditional villages that have earned the country its nickname, the “Land of a Thousand Hills.”
En route, visit the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village, where you’ll gain a fascinating insight into Rwanda’s cultural heritage. Meet members of the local community, learn about ancient traditions, and enjoy lively cultural performances featuring traditional drumming, dancing, storytelling, and demonstrations of local craftsmanship. This enriching experience provides a deeper appreciation of Rwanda’s history and community-based conservation efforts.
After the cultural visit, continue to your lodge near Volcanoes National Park. Check in and relax while enjoying breathtaking views of the Virunga Volcanoes. Spend the evening at leisure before dinner and an overnight stay at Da Vinci Gorilla Lodge.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking Adventure and Return to Kigali
After an early breakfast, transfer to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters in Kinigi for registration and a comprehensive briefing by experienced park rangers. During the briefing, you’ll learn about gorilla trekking guidelines, conservation efforts, and safety procedures before being assigned to a gorilla family based on your fitness level.
Accompanied by expert guides, begin your trek through the park’s mist-covered bamboo forests and lush mountain slopes in search of the endangered mountain gorillas. The trek may last anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the location of the gorilla family. Along the way, enjoy the park’s spectacular scenery, diverse vegetation, and opportunities to spot birds and other forest wildlife.
Once you locate the gorillas, you’ll spend a magical hour observing them in their natural habitat. Watch as they feed, groom, play, and interact with one another—an extraordinary wildlife encounter that ranks among Africa’s most memorable experiences.
