Detailed Itinerary of 3 Days Rwanda Bird Watching Safari

Day 1: Birding at Nyarutarama Lake – Transfer to Akagera National Park & Lake Ihema Boat Safari

Your birding adventure begins with an early morning pick-up from your hotel or Kigali International Airport by your professional birding guide. After a short briefing, head to Nyarutarama Lake, one of Kigali’s finest urban birding sites, located near the Kigali Golf Course. The lake’s wetlands and surrounding vegetation provide an excellent habitat for numerous resident and migratory bird species.

During your guided bird walk, look out for a variety of waterbirds, including the Yellow-billed Duck, African Spoonbill, White-faced Whistling Duck, Squacco Heron, Hottentot Teal, Black Crake, Hadada Ibis, Little Grebe, Black Egret, Cattle Egret, and Black-headed Heron. The surrounding woodlands and gardens are also home to species such as the African Fish Eagle, Black Kite, Pygmy Kingfisher, White-browed Coucal, Paradise Flycatcher, Grey-capped Warbler, African Hobby, and several sunbirds, swallows, martins, and cisticolas.

Day 2: Full-Day Bird Watching in Akagera National Park

After an early breakfast, set out for a full-day birding excursion through the diverse habitats of Akagera National Park, including open savannah, wetlands, lakes, woodlands, and papyrus swamps. Home to more than 500 recorded bird species, the park offers exceptional birdwatching opportunities throughout the year.

As you explore the park, your guide will help you identify a remarkable variety of birds, including the Lilac-breasted Roller, Black-headed Gonolek, Crested Barbet, Grey Hornbill, Ross’s Turaco, Heuglin’s Robin-Chat, and numerous raptors. The park’s wetlands also support papyrus specialists such as the White-winged Swamp Warbler, Carruthers’s Cisticola, and Northern Brown-throated Weaver.

Keep your binoculars ready for sightings of the elegant Grey Crowned Crane, colorful bee-eaters, kingfishers, weavers, herons, storks, and eagles. If fortune is on your side, you may even spot the highly sought-after Shoebill, one of Africa’s most iconic and elusive birds.

Day 3: Birding at Mount Kigali & Departure

After breakfast, depart Akagera National Park and begin your return journey to Kigali. Upon arrival, continue to Mount Kigali, the highest hill overlooking Rwanda’s capital, for your final birding excursion.

The forest patches, grasslands, and woodland habitats around Mount Kigali provide excellent opportunities to observe species not commonly found in Akagera. During your guided walk, search for birds such as the African Paradise Flycatcher, White-eyed Slaty Flycatcher, Southern Black Flycatcher, Red-chested Cuckoo, Green-backed Camaroptera, Tropical Boubou, Northern Puffback, Thick-billed Seedeater, Bronze Mannikin, Common Bulbul, and Yellow-fronted Canary.
