Detailed Itinerary of 3 Days Rwanda Gorilla and Golden Monkey Trekking

Day 1: Kigali City Tour and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport or after breakfast at your hotel, you will be met by your professional driver-guide for a briefing on your safari. Begin with a guided tour of Kigali, one of Africa’s cleanest and most vibrant cities. Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, where you will gain insight into Rwanda’s history and remarkable journey of reconciliation. Continue to local markets and craft centers to experience the city’s lively atmosphere and discover authentic Rwandan arts and crafts.

After lunch, depart Kigali and drive north toward Volcanoes National Park. The scenic journey offers magnificent views of rolling hills, terraced farmland, and picturesque rural villages. Upon arrival at your lodge near the park, check in and relax while enjoying spectacular views of the Virunga Mountains. Dinner and overnight at your selected lodge.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking and Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village Visit

After an early breakfast, transfer to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters in Kinigi for a briefing by park rangers. Following registration, you will be assigned to a habituated gorilla family and begin your trek through the misty forests and bamboo-covered slopes of the Virunga Mountains.

The trek may last from one to six hours depending on the location of the gorilla family. Once found, you will spend a magical hour observing these gentle giants in their natural habitat. Watch them feed, groom, play, and interact with one another while capturing unforgettable photographs and memories. This extraordinary encounter is widely regarded as one of Africa’s most rewarding wildlife experiences.

After the trek, return to your lodge for lunch and relaxation. In the afternoon, visit the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village, also known as the Gorilla Guardians Village. Here, you will experience traditional Rwandan culture through music, dance, storytelling, and demonstrations of local customs. Learn about the community’s conservation efforts and how former poachers have become active participants in protecting Rwanda’s wildlife heritage.

Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Golden Monkey Trekking or Dian Fossey Tomb Hike – Return to Kigali

Following breakfast, return to Volcanoes National Park for another exciting adventure. Choose between golden monkey trekking or an optional Dian Fossey Tomb hike.

For golden monkey trekking, you will enter the park’s bamboo forests in search of these rare and energetic primates. Observe them leaping through the trees, feeding, and interacting within their groups while enjoying excellent photography opportunities.

Alternatively, embark on a hike to the Dian Fossey Tomb and Karisoke Research Center, where you will learn about the life and conservation legacy of the famous primatologist who dedicated her life to protecting mountain gorillas. The hike also offers beautiful views of the surrounding volcanoes and forest landscapes.

After your chosen activity, return to the lodge for lunch before beginning the drive back to Kigali. Enjoy Rwanda’s stunning countryside one last time as you travel through the rolling hills and rural communities. Upon arrival in Kigali, you will be transferred to your hotel or Kigali International Airport for your departure flight.
