Day 1: Arrival in Kigali & Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your professional driver-guide, who will brief you on your upcoming gorilla trekking adventure. From Kigali, enjoy a scenic drive of approximately 2.5 hours through Rwanda’s breathtaking countryside, passing rolling hills, terraced farms, and picturesque villages on your way to Volcanoes National Park.

Upon arrival, check in to your luxury lodge nestled at the foothills of the Virunga Mountains. Spend the remainder of the day relaxing while taking in the spectacular volcanic scenery and preparing for your first gorilla trekking experience the following morning.

Day 2: First Gorilla Trekking Experience

After an early breakfast, your driver-guide will transfer you to the Kinigi Park Headquarters for registration and a detailed briefing by Rwanda Development Board (RDB) park rangers. During the briefing, you’ll learn about gorilla trekking regulations, safety guidelines, and conservation efforts before being assigned to one of the park’s habituated gorilla families based on your fitness level.

Accompanied by experienced ranger guides, begin your trek through the lush bamboo forests and montane vegetation of Volcanoes National Park. Depending on the location of the assigned gorilla family, the trek may last anywhere between 2 and 6 hours. Along the way, enjoy the stunning scenery while learning about the park’s unique flora and fauna.

Once you locate the gorillas, you’ll spend one unforgettable hour observing them in their natural habitat. Watch the dominant silverback protect the family, juveniles play among the vegetation, and mothers nurture their young—an extraordinary wildlife encounter that few experiences can rival.

After an early breakfast, return to the Kinigi Park Headquarters for another briefing before embarking on your second gorilla trekking adventure. This time, you will be assigned to a different habituated gorilla family, allowing you to experience a new trekking route and observe the unique behaviors, social dynamics, and personalities of another gorilla group.

Accompanied by experienced park rangers, venture once again into the misty forests of Volcanoes National Park. The trek may take between 2 and 6 hours, depending on the location of the gorilla family. Along the way, enjoy the park’s spectacular scenery, lush bamboo forests, and diverse wildlife.

Upon locating the gorillas, you’ll spend one unforgettable hour observing these magnificent primates in their natural habitat. This second encounter offers an excellent opportunity to compare the characteristics of different gorilla families while capturing even more incredible photographs and memories.

After the trek, return to your lodge for lunch and spend the remainder of the afternoon relaxing or enjoying the stunning views of the Virunga Volcanoes.
