Day 1: Arrival in Kigali – City Tour – Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your professional driver-guide. Depending on your arrival time, enjoy a guided Kigali City Tour, including a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, local craft markets, or other cultural attractions, where you’ll gain insight into Rwanda’s remarkable history and vibrant culture.

After lunch, depart Kigali for Volcanoes National Park, enjoying a scenic drive of approximately 2.5 hours through Rwanda’s beautiful countryside, famously known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills.” Along the way, admire rolling hills, terraced farms, and picturesque villages before arriving at your lodge in the late afternoon.

Check in, relax, and enjoy dinner while preparing for your gorilla trekking adventure the following day.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking & Gorilla Guardians Village Visit

After an early breakfast, transfer to the Kinigi Park Headquarters for a briefing by Rwanda Development Board (RDB) park rangers. Following the briefing, you’ll be assigned to one of the habituated gorilla families before setting off into the lush forests of Volcanoes National Park.

The trek may take between 2 and 6 hours, depending on the location of the gorilla family. Once you locate these gentle giants, you’ll spend one unforgettable hour observing them in their natural habitat as they feed, groom, play, and interact with one another.

After returning from the trek, enjoy lunch at your lodge before visiting the Gorilla Guardians Village (Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village). Here you’ll experience traditional Rwandan music, dance, storytelling, and local customs while learning how former poachers have become active participants in gorilla conservation.

Return to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 3: Transfer to Akagera National Park

Following breakfast, check out and begin the scenic drive east to Akagera National Park, Rwanda’s only savannah national park and home to the famous Big Five.

Arrive in the afternoon and check in to your safari lodge before enjoying an evening game drive through the park. Explore Akagera’s diverse landscapes of open savannah, wetlands, woodlands, and lakes while searching for elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, warthogs, and, if you’re lucky, lions or leopards. The park is also a paradise for birdwatchers, with over 500 recorded bird species, including African Fish Eagles, Grey Crowned Cranes, kingfishers, herons, and the rare Shoebill.
