Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali & Kigali City Tour
Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be welcomed by your professional birding guide and transferred to your hotel. Depending on your arrival time, enjoy a guided tour of Kigali, including visits to notable landmarks such as the Kigali Genocide Memorial, local craft markets, and cultural centers.
The city tour provides a fascinating introduction to Rwanda’s history, culture, and remarkable transformation. Later, return to your hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 2: Birdwatching at Nyabarongo Wetlands & Nyarutarama Lake
After an early breakfast, depart for Nyabarongo Wetlands, one of Rwanda’s most important birding sites. The extensive papyrus swamps and wetland habitats support numerous bird species, including the Papyrus Gonolek, White-winged Swamp Warbler, Lesser Jacana, Yellow-billed Stork, African Openbill, and many others.
After lunch, continue to Nyarutarama Lake, located near Kigali Golf Course. This peaceful birding spot offers opportunities to observe species such as the African Fish Eagle, Grey-capped Warbler, Pygmy Kingfisher, White-browed Coucal, Hottentot Teal, and various herons and waterbirds.

Day 3: Birding & Wildlife Viewing in Akagera National Park
Following breakfast, depart for Akagera National Park, Rwanda’s premier wildlife and birding destination. The park’s diverse ecosystems—including savannah grasslands, acacia woodlands, lakes, and wetlands—support an impressive variety of birdlife.
Enjoy a game drive while searching for notable species such as the Red-faced Barbet, Bennett’s Woodpecker, White-winged Warbler, Carruthers’s Cisticola, African Fish Eagle, Bateleur, and numerous raptors.
In the afternoon, explore the park’s wetland areas and lakes, where you may spot the iconic Shoebill, African Jacana, Black Crake, White-backed Duck, and many other aquatic birds. Wildlife sightings may include elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, antelopes, and more.

Day 5: Birding in Bugesera & Departure
After breakfast, travel to the Bugesera region, one of Rwanda’s lesser-known but highly rewarding birding areas. The lakes, woodlands, and agricultural landscapes provide habitats for numerous bird species, including the White-collared Oliveback, African Green Pigeon, Red-chested Cuckoo, Bronze Mannikin, Tropical Boubou, and many others.
You may also visit the historic Nyamata and Ntarama Genocide Memorials, offering a deeper understanding of Rwanda’s history and resilience.
