Detailed Itinerary
5:00 AM – Pick-up from Kigali
Your safari begins with an early morning pick-up from your hotel or residence in Kigali by your professional driver-guide. After a short briefing, depart for Akagera National Park, located approximately 110 kilometers east of Kigali. The journey takes about 2½ to 3 hours, passing through Rwanda’s beautiful countryside, rural villages, rolling hills, and cultivated farmlands.
7:30 AM – Arrival and Park Entry
Arrive at the southern entrance of Akagera National Park, where you’ll complete park registration before receiving a brief introduction to the day’s activities. From here, your wildlife adventure begins as you enter one of East Africa’s most diverse protected areas.
8:00 AM – Morning Game Drive
Set off on an exciting morning game drive through Akagera’s diverse habitats, including open savannah, acacia woodlands, wetlands, and rolling hills. Early morning is one of the best times to spot wildlife as many animals are active before the heat of the day.
Keep your camera ready for sightings of elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, impalas, topis, warthogs, waterbucks, elands, and several species of antelope. With a bit of luck, you may also encounter lions, leopards, or one of the park’s reintroduced black or white rhinos.
Your guide will share fascinating insights into the park’s wildlife, ecosystems, conservation efforts, and the successful restoration of the Big Five.
10:30 AM – Scenic Stop and Refreshments
Pause at one of Akagera’s scenic viewpoints to stretch your legs, enjoy light refreshments, and admire panoramic views of the park’s rolling hills, lakes, and vast savannah. This is also an excellent opportunity for photography before continuing your safari.
12:00 PM – Boat Cruise on Lake Ihema
Continue to beautiful Lake Ihema, the second-largest lake in Rwanda, for a relaxing guided boat cruise. This is one of the highlights of visiting Akagera National Park.
As you cruise along the shoreline, you’ll observe large pods of hippos relaxing in the water, Nile crocodiles basking along the banks, and numerous water birds including African fish eagles, kingfishers, African jacanas, cormorants, herons, egrets, and colorful bee-eaters. The boat safari also offers excellent opportunities to see elephants, buffaloes, and antelopes visiting the lake to drink.
1:30 PM – Picnic Lunch
After the boat safari, enjoy a delicious picnic lunch at one of the park’s designated picnic sites overlooking the lake or surrounded by the beautiful wilderness. Relax while taking in the peaceful atmosphere and spectacular scenery before continuing your afternoon adventure.
2:30 PM – Afternoon Game Drive
After lunch, continue exploring different sections of the park on another rewarding game drive. Visit areas you may have missed earlier while searching for additional wildlife species.
The afternoon provides excellent opportunities to spot predators becoming active, including lions and, if fortunate, the elusive leopard. You’ll also have chances to observe large herds of buffaloes, giraffes browsing on acacia trees, elephants moving through the woodlands, zebras grazing across the plains, and a variety of bird species that make Akagera one of Rwanda’s premier birdwatching destinations.
4:30 PM – Exit the Park
Begin your drive back toward the park gate while enjoying your final wildlife sightings and taking in the breathtaking scenery one last time.
5:00 PM – Return Journey to Kigali
Depart Akagera National Park and begin the scenic drive back to Kigali. Along the way, reflect on an incredible day spent exploring Rwanda’s only savannah national park and its remarkable wildlife.
6:30 PM – Arrival in Kigali
