Detailed Itinerary of 3 Days Golden Monkey Trekking & Mount Bisoke Hiking Safari

Day 1: Kigali – Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Your adventure begins with a warm welcome at Kigali International Airport or your hotel by your professional driver-guide. After a short safari briefing, depart Kigali for Volcanoes National Park, enjoying a scenic drive of approximately 2.5 to 3 hours through Rwanda’s famous rolling hills, picturesque villages, and terraced farmland.

Upon arrival in Musanze, enjoy lunch before checking in at your lodge near the park. The remainder of the afternoon is at leisure. Depending on your arrival time, you may choose to visit the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, explore the Iby’Iwacu (Gorilla Guardians) Cultural Village, or simply relax while admiring the magnificent Virunga Volcanoes.

Return to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 2: Golden Monkey Trekking Experience

After an early breakfast, transfer to the Kinigi Park Headquarters for a briefing by experienced park rangers before beginning your golden monkey trekking adventure.

Accompanied by expert guides, venture into the bamboo forests of Volcanoes National Park in search of the endangered golden monkeys, a species found only in the Virunga Massif. The trek is generally moderate and lasts between two and four hours, depending on the monkeys’ location.

Once you locate the habituated troop, spend one memorable hour observing these lively primates as they leap through the bamboo, forage for food, groom one another, and interact within their social groups. Their playful behavior and striking golden-orange fur make for exceptional photography opportunities.

After the trek, return to your lodge for lunch and spend the afternoon relaxing or enjoying optional visits to nearby community projects, local craft markets, or nature walks around the park.

Day 3: Mount Bisoke Hike & Return to Kigali

Rise early for breakfast before returning to the park headquarters for registration and a briefing ahead of your Mount Bisoke hike.

Standing at 3,711 meters above sea level, Mount Bisoke is one of the most scenic volcanoes in the Virunga Range. Accompanied by experienced guides and park rangers, begin your ascent through lush rainforest, bamboo zones, giant heather, and afro-alpine vegetation. Along the trail, you may encounter colorful bird species, unique mountain flora, and occasionally signs of other wildlife inhabiting the park.

After approximately 3 to 4 hours of hiking, reach the summit, where you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views of the beautiful crater lake nestled within the volcano. Take time to rest, enjoy the scenery, and capture memorable photographs before beginning your descent.

After returning to the trailhead, enjoy lunch before departing for Kigali. Arrive in the evening, where your driver-guide will transfer you to your hotel or Kigali International Airport, bringing your unforgettable Rwanda adventure to a close.
