History of the Agashya Gorilla Family

When the family was first habituated for tourism and research, it consisted of 13 members, earning it the nickname “Group 13.” At the time, the family was led by the dominant silverback Nyakarima, who successfully guided the group for several years.
Everything changed when a younger and stronger silverback named Agashya, whose name means “the news” or “new development” in Kinyarwanda, challenged Nyakarima for leadership. After successfully taking over the group, Agashya led the family to higher elevations on the slopes of Mount Sabyinyo, where he established his authority. Following the change in leadership, the group officially became known as the Agashya Gorilla Family.
Under Agashya’s leadership, the family expanded significantly. Rather than relying solely on births, Agashya strengthened his group by attracting females and younger gorillas from neighboring families, helping the group grow into one of the largest habituated gorilla families in Volcanoes National Park.
Group Composition
The Agashya Gorilla Family currently consists of approximately 25 members, although the exact number changes over time as infants are born and individuals transfer between gorilla groups. The group includes several silverbacks, adult females, blackbacks, juveniles, sub-adults, and playful infants, creating a rich and complex social structure. Agashya is known for being extremely protective of his family. About Mountain Gorillas
Mountain gorillas are the largest living primates and belong to the eastern gorilla subspecies. Adult males, known as silverbacks, can weigh between 140 and 205 kilograms and stand approximately 1.7 meters tall when upright. They are easily recognized by the distinctive silver hair that develops across their backs as they mature.
These gentle giants live in close family groups led by a dominant silverback responsible for protecting the group, resolving conflicts, and guiding daily movements. Mountain gorillas feed primarily on leaves, bamboo shoots, stems, roots, wild celery, and other vegetation. About Volcanoes National Park
