Detailed Itinerary of 4 Days Rwanda Gorilla Safari Adventure

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali

Welcome to Rwanda, the “Land of a Thousand Hills.” Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your professional driver-guide and transferred to your hotel in Kigali. After check-in, your guide will brief you on your upcoming safari, including the itinerary, gorilla trekking guidelines, and what to expect during your adventure. Spend the rest of the day relaxing after your journey.

Day 2: Kigali City Tour & Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

After breakfast, embark on a guided Kigali City Tour to discover Rwanda’s vibrant capital. Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, where you’ll gain insight into the country’s history and remarkable journey of reconciliation. Depending on your interests, you may also explore local craft markets, art galleries, or other cultural attractions.

Following lunch, depart Kigali for Volcanoes National Park, a scenic drive of approximately 2.5 hours through Rwanda’s beautiful countryside. As you travel north, admire the rolling hills, picturesque villages, and spectacular views of the Virunga Volcanoes.

Upon arrival, check in to your lodge and spend the evening relaxing while preparing for your unforgettable gorilla trekking experience the following day.

Day 3: Gorilla Trekking & Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village Visit

After an early breakfast, your driver-guide will transfer you to the Kinigi Park Headquarters for a briefing by Rwanda Development Board (RDB) park rangers. During the briefing, you will learn the gorilla trekking guidelines before being assigned to one of the park’s habituated gorilla families.

Accompanied by experienced ranger guides, venture into the dense bamboo forests of Volcanoes National Park in search of the endangered mountain gorillas. The trek may last anywhere from 2 to 6 hours, depending on the location of the gorilla family. Once you locate the gorillas, you’ll spend one unforgettable hour observing their fascinating behavior, taking photographs, and appreciating this extraordinary wildlife encounter.

After the trek, return to your lodge for lunch and some time to relax. In the afternoon, visit the Iby’Iwacu (Gorilla Guardians) Cultural Village, where you’ll experience traditional Rwandan music, dance, storytelling, and local customs while learning about the community’s conservation efforts and cultural heritage.

Return to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 4: Golden Monkey Trekking & Return to Kigali

After breakfast, return to the Kinigi Park Headquarters for a briefing before setting off on your golden monkey trekking adventure. These rare and playful primates inhabit the bamboo forests at the base of the Virunga Volcanoes and are known for their striking golden-orange fur and energetic movements.

The trek is generally shorter and less demanding than gorilla trekking, offering excellent opportunities to observe the monkeys as they leap through the bamboo forest, forage for food, and interact within their troops.

After your trek, return to the lodge for lunch before checking out and beginning the scenic drive back to Kigali. Depending on your flight schedule, your driver-guide will transfer you either to Kigali International Airport for your departure or to your hotel, bringing your unforgettable Rwanda safari adventure to a close.
