Virunga Lodge has a strong connection to the history of mountain gorilla conservation, particularly through its Dian Fossey Map Room. The exhibition honors Dr. Dian Fossey, the pioneering primatologist who established the Karisoke Research Center in the Virunga Mountains in 1967.
The Map Room provides visitors with an opportunity to explore the history of exploration and conservation in the Virunga Volcanoes. Its permanent exhibition, opened on 2 March 2017, traces the work of explorers and conservationists associated with the region between approximately 1850 and 1985, the year of Fossey’s death.
